Day 4 - Attachment to Power
Begin with prayer -
"God, I believe that You are searching for me and I open my heart to You today. Please clear away the things that are blocking the door to my heart."
Meditation -
Perhaps when listening to Bishop Barron's homily you considered power to be the one he mentioned that didn't seem to be that great of an attachment for you. Many people believe that they don't really have an attachment to power. After all, that kind of attachment seems more of an issue for politicians, the wealthy, and people in leadership positions. Additionally, maybe you think that to be "in charge" is stressful and you're fine just "going with the flow". However, it is important to remember that just because we don't seek the positions of obvious power, or they have never been offered to us, doesn't mean that we do not have an attachment to power or control. There are many ways that an attachment to power can manifest in even the most easy-going personality, and it is a basic human desire to seek control over our circumstances and the power to make decisions. The attachment appears when that desire is greater than our trust and abandonment to God's will and our attention to the needs of others.
Take five minutes to think about your attachments to power and control, whether these manifest in big or small ways. With each attachment you identify, close your eyes, and physically pull your hand from in front of your heart, drawing the attachment out of your heart and then place it in your other open hand. Offer it to God and ask Him to heal you from the root of this attachment. The opposing virtue to an attachment to power is meekness. Pray to Jesus, "Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make my heart like unto Thine."
